Meet a True Blue Aussie who gave away teaching about Australia to sing about it and has never looked back. He is Beechworth's Lazy Harry (alias Mark Stephens) - a lover of singing Australian Songs about this wide, brown land. A born entertainer, his blend of music and typical Aussie humour with its attacks on pretension, is as Australian as meat pies and Holden cars.
Lazy Harry has no regrets since putting aside his teaching books and picking up the guitar. Since he moved to Beechworth, this bush poet of Australian Songs has added a recording studio to his home and called it Witchettygrub Records.
"I set it up because when I went around to record my first CD I found studios wanted an arm and a leg" he said. And as for his nick name: "I took that from an old publican who ran a pub up in the hills of Gundagai".
In beautiful bush setting, his Beechworth home overlooks a lake - "Where I love to go just to sit in peace, listen to the birds and think up new ideas for songs".
