Goorlil is a word used by the Aboriginal Bardi "Saltwater" people meaning turtle. They are found along the Dampier peninsula coastline in NW Australia in tidal creeks, reefs and natural permanent fish traps. Turtles are a delicacy for the Bardi people and a spear is used to catch them. The Aboriginal Bardi "Saltwater" People live as one with the sea, only taking what is needed, which is vital to sustain variety and number of turtles for future generations.
