Jigsaw - Stolen Footprints

  • Aboriginal Art Jigsaw
  • Number of pieces 30
  • Plywood backing
  • Size 30 x 42cm (11.50 x 16.50ins)

This painting by Aboriginal artist Morderrwarr is based on the true story of an Aboriginal man who had his children taken away from him when they were very young.  He placed a can over his child's footprints, and, to remind him of his stolen child, he would lift up the can and look at the "Stolen Footprints".

"The four pairs of feet" represent parents who have lost their children to the stolen generation, facing out as they watch their children being taken away.

"The feet walking away" represent those children taken (also the feet get bigger as the children get older).

"Circle around the first footprint" is the can that was placed over the first footprint.

"Orange hands" represent the father picking up the can to remember.

"Black hands" represent coming up empty handed.

"Red and blue trail" represents hearts bleeding and tears shed.

This painting is dedicated to the parents and the children of the stolen generation.
